Alloa Baptist Church

Our story began
in 1838.

For almost two centuries, people have gathered as a Baptist church in Alloa to worship God, share Christ and serve others.

Our beginnings A church takes root

Six people,
one shared faith.

Alloa Baptist Church was formed in 1838 by six members of Stirling Baptist Church. The small congregation first met in a private house in Mar Street.

As the church grew, it established a more permanent home in the town. In 1847, the congregation purchased a former Episcopal chapel in East Vennel.

The present church building in Ludgate opened in 1881 and has remained the centre of the congregation’s worship and community life.

  1. The church is formed

    Six members of Stirling Baptist Church establish a Baptist congregation in Alloa and meet in a Mar Street home.

  2. A home in East Vennel

    The congregation purchases the former Episcopal chapel in East Vennel.

  3. The move to Ludgate

    The present church opens in Ludgate. Its date stone still records the year.

  4. Worship continues online

    During the pandemic, recorded services helped the congregation continue worshipping together while meeting in person was restricted.

  5. A new charitable structure

    Alloa Baptist Church becomes a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation, registered as Scottish Charity SC052944.

  6. Serving Alloa

    The church continues to gather for worship and to provide a welcoming place for fellowship and community activity.

The sanctuary

These photographs, recovered from an archive of the church’s earlier website, record an extensive programme of work. They follow the project from exterior scaffolding and the stripping of the main hall through to the rebuilt interior and completed sanctuary.
